If you've been told you need a root canal, take a breath. The procedure has an undeserved reputation — in reality, a root canal doesn't cause pain. It relieves it. At Maggie A. Kleem, DDS in Berea, Ohio, we perform root canal treatment with a gentle touch, modern anesthesia, and a focus on keeping you comfortable from the moment you walk in the door. Most of our patients are genuinely surprised by how straightforward it is.
If you're dealing with a persistent toothache or any of the warning signs below, don't wait. Delaying treatment allows infection to spread and can put the tooth — and your overall health — at greater risk. We see dental pain patients as soon as possible, including same-day and next-day appointments.
What Is Root Canal Treatment?
Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp — a bundle of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue that helped the tooth develop. When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, a crack, a chip, or repeated dental work, it can cause significant pain and, left untreated, lead to abscess or tooth loss.
Root canal treatment removes the damaged pulp, thoroughly cleans and disinfects the inner canals of the tooth, then seals everything to prevent re-infection. Once the pulp is gone, a fully matured tooth can survive perfectly well — it just needs a crown to protect and restore it to full function. We often place crowns the same day using our in-office CEREC technology, so you leave with a complete, restored tooth in a single visit.
Signs You May Need a Root Canal
These symptoms don't guarantee you'll need root canal treatment — only an exam and X-rays can confirm that — but they're important signals that something is wrong inside the tooth and that you should call us promptly:
- Severe, persistent toothache — pain that doesn't subside on its own and may worsen when you bite or apply pressure.
- Prolonged hot or cold sensitivity — lingering sensitivity that stays long after the source of heat or cold is removed.
- Darkening or discoloration of the tooth — the tooth may take on a grayish or brownish hue as the pulp deteriorates inside.
- A pimple-like bump on the gum — a recurring sore or abscess on the gum near a tooth is often a sign of infection draining from inside the root.
- Swollen or tender gums — persistent swelling or tenderness around a specific tooth, sometimes accompanied by a bad taste in the mouth.
The Root Canal Process — Step by Step
Here's exactly what to expect when you come in for root canal treatment at our Berea office:
-
1
Exam and X-rays Dr. Kleem will take digital X-rays to assess the extent of the infection, confirm the diagnosis, and plan the safest approach for your specific tooth.
-
2
Anesthesia and comfort We thoroughly numb the area with local anesthesia. You may feel some pressure, but you should not feel pain. If you're anxious, let us know — we'll take every step to help you feel at ease.
-
3
Pulp removal A small opening is made in the top of the tooth, and the infected or inflamed pulp tissue is carefully removed from inside the root canals.
-
4
Cleaning and sealing The canals are meticulously cleaned, shaped, and disinfected, then filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and sealed to prevent future infection.
-
5
Crown placement The tooth is restored with a custom crown to protect it and restore full biting strength. Thanks to our CEREC technology, your crown can often be designed, milled, and placed the same day — no second appointment needed.
