What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation that requires immediate attention to relieve severe pain, stop bleeding, or save a tooth. If you are unsure whether your situation is an emergency, call us — we will help you decide.

Common emergencies we treat at our Berea, Ohio office:

!
Severe Toothache

Persistent, intense tooth pain that isn't going away.

!
Knocked-Out Tooth

Call immediately — time is critical to save the tooth.

!
Cracked or Broken Tooth

Especially with pain or sharp edges causing soft tissue injury.

!
Dental Abscess

Swelling, pus, or a pimple-like bump on the gum near a tooth.

!
Lost Crown or Filling

Exposed tooth structure can be painful and needs prompt attention.

!
Significant Bleeding

Uncontrolled bleeding following a procedure or injury.

What to Do If a Tooth Is Knocked Out

Time is critical. The best chance of saving a knocked-out tooth is within 30–60 minutes of the injury. Follow these steps:

  1. 1

Pick the tooth up by the crown (the part you can see) — do NOT touch the root.

  2. 2

Rinse it gently with clean water — do NOT scrub it.

  3. 3

Try to reinsert it into the socket. If that's not possible, keep it moist in a glass of milk or between your cheek and gum.

  4. 4

Call us immediately at (440) 239-8389 and come in right away.

What to Do for a Severe Toothache

  • Rinse with warm salt water
  • Gently floss around the tooth to remove any trapped food
  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed on the label
  • Do NOT put aspirin directly on the tooth or gum — this can damage tissue
  • Call us at (440) 239-8389 — severe toothache often signals infection that needs treatment
